Our Story
The Pear at Parley opened its doors in May 2018, founded by owner-managers Mark Miller, Claire Miller, and Matthew Martinez.
Mark and Matthew shared a working partnership spanning over two decades, including six vibrant years on the Spanish island of Mallorca, where they developed a deep love for Mediterranean cuisine. More recently, their culinary journey brought them to Dorset, where they spent over 12 years honing their craft. Mark is a highly experienced chef, known for his creativity and passion in the kitchen, while Matthew was the welcoming face of the business, bringing warmth and charm to the front of house.
Tragically, Matthew passed away in February 2019. In his memory, Mark and his family have lovingly carried on their shared vision, honoring his legacy through everything they do at The Pear.
The meaning behind “The Pear”
The name The Pear at Parley is a nod to the local heritage of West Parley, which dates back to Anglo-Saxon times when "Parley" translated to "Pear Tree." Historically, the area was known for its abundant pear tree orchards—a legacy we proudly reflect in our name. Rooted in tradition and inspired by nature, The Pear at Parley celebrates the rich history and welcoming spirit of the land it stands on.
